About the artist

I’m a figurative artist living in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in Cumbria in the UK.  A member of the Green Door Artists collective, I mainly concentrate on portraiture, but I sometimes do studies of flowers or wildlife to explore different colour palettes and textures.

Lately, my focus has been shifting between realism and abstraction, nature and imagination. You could call it “disrupted realism” as opposed to “classical realism”. This approach allows for more subjectivity.  I’ve also returned to using cold wax medium with my usual oil paint, partly because this adds body to the paint, which is great for building up texture and patina.  It removes high gloss, yet has a translucency that will buff to a nice lustre.  Using tools such as spatulas, palette knives, fingers, twigs and rollers, as well as brushes, I build the image up in layers.  Areas can be preserved when layering, by masking them off.  Alternatively, removing part of a layer reveals colours and textures previously applied. In this way, complexity develops, and I find it a more expressive way of working.

I love to use oil paint, as it’s versatile, enduring and subtle and endlessly challenging.  Drawing in graphite  and charcoal is really important to me too.  It’s very satisfying to use charcoal I’ve made myself.  I’ve tried different types of stems from the garden, like hawthorn and wild rose. Complementing this more subjective approach, my colour palette is currently less naturalistic and experimentation keeps things interesting and fresh for me. Academic knowledge is great, but I don’t want it to limit my creativity. Letting the painting lead the way is much more fun and rewarding!

Please email me at angela@angelajacksonart.co.uk if you are interested in commissioning a work in either graphite, charcoal or oils.
