Getting nearer with this portrait of @susie_spearax I liked how her top echoed the berry tones of her hair so decided to go with the pattern detail.

Sunday ‘baking’ (polymer clay) because...I love to try new recipes!😂🤷‍♀️ I used to make lots of ‘food’ for my daughter’s dolls & creatures...suddenly got the urge to play again. I wanted some bigger than the 1:12 dolls house size readily available (1:6?) so had to make it. Also went for a run before breakfast 😮 #whevenami

Time for a brew & I thought I’d share this robin in progress (seems I’m a sucker for cute robins). I put up a new bird feeder which seemed to prompt the him(?) to up his territorial game. He’s wearing himself out chasing off anything smaller or the same size as himself🙄 There’s plenty of food to go round....🤷‍♀️

Where did last week go?!😮 Amongst other things, I’ve started on this portrait of @susie_spearax ,Therapy Services Manager for University Hospitals Morecambe Bay NHS Trust. She’s working extra long hours atm as Covid19 ramps up again. A great friend, Susie is a thoughtful & creative, multi-talented lady, at home sailing around the Scottish Isles, renovating her house, tending her veg or cooking up a storm in the kitchen.
The lighting for this portrait wasn’t ideal but since lockdown regs have tightened again, I’m using it as a challenge.
I’ve been making the best of the dry weather & done a bit of foraging too...the temperature has dropped & the wet stuff arrived yesterday!

A bit more on this one. Re: coconut feeders-when they’re finished, I fill the coconut shells with my own mix including beef dripping, sultanas, mealworms, peanuts, sunflower hearts and mixed birdseed. The birds seem to like it!

#WIP “Three’s a Crowd” - these conkers would keep rolling into little conversational cliques! Might try to do some more before they shrivel up.... They make good moth repellents and contain an anti inflammatory - you can buy horse chestnut gel for bruises & sprains. They’re supposed to be good at keeping spiders away, anyone had any success with this method? & no, I don’t think you’re supposed to throw the conkers at them!😂 Got some scary hairy arachnids around the house atm🕷😱
Unlike sweet chestnuts which are great in soup etc., horse chestnuts are poisonous....☠️

#tbt The subject is trapped in suspended animation. Or that is how I see this painting in light of the continuing effects of lockdown: so many lives, dreams and aspirations on hold, so many still isolated.

At the time of painting this, I’d been thinking about how ephemeral the human was in contrast to the crystal (in this case, fluorapatite) that distorts it.

Which goes to show, perhaps, how much our evolving experience affects our interpretation of artworks!

Revisiting this book by Philip Vann from 2004 (pub. Samson & Co)- self-portraits are such an interesting route into C20th art history! It’s full of inspirational works, too many to choose from really. (Stanley Spencer’s in twice because I’m fascinated/freaked out by the ageing process- & I admire his work😉)
